Davao City has once again bagged the Presidential Award for the most child-friendly city for the 5th time.
No less than President Rodrigo Duterte presented the award to officials of Davao City in Malacanang Monday afternoon (Sept. 26). The award was given through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Davao City won under the Highly Urbanized Category.
The other awardees were the municipality of Buenavista, Guimaras (3rd Class Municipality Category), Dumalneg, Ilocos Sur (4th Class to 6th Class Municipality Category), Iligan City (Component City Category), and Santiago City (Independent Component City Category).
The award was received by lawyer Lawrence Bantiding, the assistant city administrator for operations, and Ms. Malu Bermudo, chief of the Davao City Social Services and Development Office.
Davao City won the same award in 1998, 1999, 2013, and 2014. Having won the award consecutively, the city is now a Hall of Fame awardee, according to Bermudo.
Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said the award was a proof that the programs and projects intended for the protection of the rights and welfare of the children of the city are yielding positive results.
“Congratulations to the people of Davao and the officials of the city government who made Davao City a safe and enjoyable place for children to live. Let us keep responding to the pressing needs of our children to be educated, fed, clothed, and provided with a safe home,” she said.
The Dabawenyos, she said, should claim this recognition collectively, but at the same time, take it as a challenge to continue making Davao a place where children can enjoy their freedom and a city where children’s rights are protected and upheld. | CIO
