Senator Bam Aquino on Tuesday expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s (SC) decision to allow a hero’s burial for the late-President Ferdinand Marcos, whom he called a “corrupt and ruthless dictator.” “We are gravely disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision to bury a corrupt and ruthless dictator in the LNMB (Libingan ng mga Bayani),” Aquino said in a statement. The senator is the nephew of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., one of the prominent opposition leaders during the Martial Law era. He is also the cousin of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Senator Aquino said that while he respects the decision of the SC justices voting 9-5 with one inhibition, his heart goes out to the thousands of Martial Law victims. He said the Marcos era were the “darkest years in Philippine history.” “With this decision, we need to be even more vigilant that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Never again,” Aquino said.
